New Rate Hike by Metropolitan Water District, what does it mean for EVMWD customers

After months of discussion and deliberation, Metropolitan Water Districtís Board of Directors approved its two-year budget and associated water rates.

As part of their budget, the Metropolitan board approved an average 5 percent increase in its base wholesale water rate in 2012-13 and 5 percent increase in 2013-14.

However, for most water agencies that purchase imported and treated water from Metropolitan, like EVMWD, those rate increases only apply to Metropolitanís basic un-treated rate.  The true rate increase for the Full Service Treated water that EVMWD purchases from Metropolitan will amount to a 6.7 percent increase in Tier 1 for 2012-13 and 8.4 percent increase in Tier 2 for 2013-14.

Metropolitan has already increased EVMWDís water rates 28.5 percent since January 2010 and now it appears another increase is on its way.

EVMWDís customers continue to conserve water which has resulted in a 15 percent overall reduction in water use.  This reduction in water use has helped decrease EVMWDís dependency on expensive imported water from Metropolitan Water District and helped offset previous rate increases.
